Known in various cultures by names such as “Bogeyman”, “Babau”, “Butzemann”, “Sack man”, “Torbalan”, “Bussemanden”, “Mörkö”, “Bala”, “El Ropavejero”, among others, the legend of El Coco is a common myth, with differences in each area, but which share similar characteristics.
The myth, in its central conception, is a character who seeks to frighten children. Depending on the region, in some cases the character becomes the counterpart of Saint Nicholas (Santa Claus), who instead of giving gifts, steals children.
In Costa Rica, El Coco is not a creature with a specific shape or physical attributes. Graphic representations of El Coco are uncommon, and it is always understood as a formless being that frightens children. Furthermore, one of the most famous and common lullabies in Costa Rica includes the lyrics: “Sleep, child, go to sleep now, for El Coco is coming and will eat you.”
Like all lullabies, its intonation is very sweet and tender, which contrasts with the macabre nature of the text.
The main idea of the work is the duality and contrast of characters, in which we can hear a reminiscence of the lullaby, but in a macabre environment, which turns into a chase and fight with El Coco.
