San José de Noche is a sonic journey that captures the nocturnal and bohemian essence of the Costa Rican capital. The work begins as an intimate conversation between friends, deciding where to go amidst the illuminated city. Soon, the journey takes the listener through strange and mysterious corners, those places "where they haunt," where the music is tinged with tension and curiosity. Later, an ambiguous and somber passage emerges, in which the sounds blend between tango and bolero, leaving the listener wondering whether it is a melancholic weariness or a romantic moment. Finally, the journey culminates in an explosion of celebration: a vibrant revelry that evokes the overflowing energy of bars, parties, and massive gatherings, reflecting the festive and exuberant spirit of San José at night.
The work was commissioned by the Post-Haste Duo, made up of Javier Rodriguez (bassoon) and Sean Fredenburg (saxophone), and had its premiere in Mexico City on September 3, 2025, with the dedicatees themselves alongside the composer at the piano.
